WHAT, WHY, HOW

KOOP Architecture + Media is a multi-disciplinary, horizontally integrated practice that creatively negotiates diverse interests to produce sustainable/dynamic buildings, spaces, and media rich environments by responding in practical and inventive ways to contemporary attitudes about life and the realities of building. Strategy and engagement are integral to KOOP’s methodology, whatever the size or type of project – be it on the scale of a building/urban design, in the arts, education, public or private sectors - we categorize, organize, evaluate, and then respond . We design by connecting the various (often divergent) components of any project.  We seize the opportunity in this fertile overlap.

We are not satisfied with the status quo. The expense of making buildings has escalated at a rate exceeding the cost of living. This forces design decisions to be made solely on the basis of cost. The result - less choice, less customization, less quality. Making matters worse, is the drive of our industry professional organizations to limit our involvement with the means and methods of construction.

Our response? We believe in both ideas and profitability . Our expertise and ambition extends beyond the discussion and design of buildings. We look at an entire project and consider the site, the cultural and economic environment, a client's physical needs and budget constraints, as well as construction techniques, branding, marketing, and post-occupancy issues.

Media, loosely termed to include building information modeling, application development, communication technologies, film, animation, and web publishing, is an integral component of our working process and repertoire. Work within this domain gives us the opportunity to explore new ideas, evaluate/respond to current trends, and see potentials across a wide range of disciplines.  Our focus is not only to produce innovative architectural forms and spaces, but to streamline the design and construction process, problem solve in the early stages of design, create new efficiencies and cost savings, and challenge the boundaries of conventional architecture.

Great architecture demands that design, finance, and technology work together - intelligent, exciting, evocative architecture can be made in the real world, with real world constraints.
